Running your business isn’t easy if you’re constantly looking backward. It’s much better to look forward, so you can actually see where you’re going.
On this episode, I want to talk to you about shifting your focus to moving forward instead of constantly looking backward. I was having a conversation with a client this week. They were telling me about the KPIs that they use in their various team meetings and there was a sense that the meetings just weren’t effective. There was a lot of time being spent on looking at data, analyzing the past, and then people would just walk out of those meetings with an interesting understanding of what’s happened but never with a clear focus of what needs to happen moving forward in order to achieve the results.
If this resonates with you, the thing that you need to start doing is thinking about how you can shift the focus in your meetings to anticipating risk, to predicting, to forecasting. So, what we did with this client was to look at what forecasts we need to start bringing into these meetings, what infrastructure needed to be put in place in order to achieve that forecasting. We started looking at what KPIs are the leading KPIs that drive the outcome KPIs or lagging KPIs. We talked about how these meetings could now be focused on forecasting, looking at leading indicators, and then setting priorities, actions, and tasks off the back of that. Essentially, finding out what’s going to move the needle over the next week and spending time and energy in the meeting on giving clarity around what that actually looks like.
If you want better results, you need to focus your daily and weekly meetings on moving the needle now, understanding what the priority needs to be over the next couple of days, over the next week. Stop looking at the past all the time. It might be interesting, but it is not that helpful.
