Is motivation overrated? Of course, motivation is important, but in my view, it is massively overrated. It’s overrated because you can’t always feel like this [shows enthusiasm] or like this [shows determination]. There are going to be times where you are going to feel a little bit more like this [shows lack of motivation]. So what do you do when your motivation wanes? For me, you rely on commitment. Commitment is so much more valuable, so much more useful. It doesn’t matter how you feel about the stuff that you need to do; it just matters that you focus on it and you do it.
I know this is pretty common sense, but so many people let themselves off the hook when they don’t feel like doing something. What I’m saying to you is, if you want brilliant long-term results, you need to be fully committed to doing the stuff you need to do when you need to do it, whether you feel like doing it or not. Hold yourself to a really high standard in this space, and pass it on to your people. Show them that it is okay not to feel motivated, but it is not okay to drop your commitments.
So, over the next week, as you find yourself drifting into a space where you don’t feel like doing something and you’re starting to go into avoidance behaviors, pick yourself up and remember this video. Motivation is highly overrated. Commitment is what will get you the consistent, long-term results that you want.
