Over the last three weeks, I’ve been working with one of my clients in helping them get a head of sales into their company. They have been inundated with great quality applicants, and it was a really tough decision to decide who was the right person. This situation got me thinking about their journey and what they’ve done to put themselves in such a fortunate position. To be honest, it’s been years and years of hard work. What they’ve done is they’ve managed to really raise their profile in their space. They enter awards, spend a lot of time and energy finding the right awards, and put those applications together. They’ve got a great reputation in their space, and that is very obvious to anybody that comes into contact with them.
They have a really strong company culture. They talk about it, recruit based on culture, do a lot of work around their company values, and they stand by them constantly. They work on their employer brand. If you go onto their website, you can see testimonials from their existing team members. They talk about what is important to the team, giving you a really good sense of what it’s like to work in their business. They’ve put all of this work into almost everything we’ve spoken about when it comes to building a great employer brand and making their company attractive. They have followed through on it brilliantly.
And voilà, two years later, we find ourselves hiring for a key role in this business’s growth journey and being inundated with brilliant candidates. You get the people you deserve. Do you have some of these boxes ticked for your business? What are you doing to build your profile in your space? What would give me an insight into what it’s like to work in your business? Do you have a great recruitment process that is painstakingly detailed and helps both parties make a good decision about whether a particular job is a good fit? If not, you’re not going to get great people.
So, don’t take the shortcut. Put effort into making yourself a highly attractive employer, and if you do that, you too might be inundated with great candidates one day.
