What drives culture?
Do you ever think about the culture in your business? It’s easy to dismiss culture as something that’s fluffy or not relevant, but I’m not so sure. The way your employees act, think and behave is a direct result of the type of culture that exists in your business. From the collective attitude towards customers & suppliers through to the way that problems are dealt with and opportunities identified. Culture touches everything. As the leader of your business you are the guardian of culture. So, whether you realise it or not, you model the behaviour for your team. Implicitly and explicitly, your actions and inactions provide your team with the cues on ‘how it works around here.’
So, how can you drive your culture? Start by identifying the key values that you want your business to embrace. It’s important to make sure these values really connect with you. Then start to live and breathe them straight away. Want people to start being more proactive? Then be proactive every day. Want a more positive team? Be positive every day and find the opportunity in every challenge. Whatever it is for you, don’t announce it to the team just start living it authentically and consistently. Mahatma Gandhi said it best with his famous quote: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” So be the change that you wish to see in your business and the rest will follow.
